Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to study factors affecting juveniles and youths’ drug abuse in Bangkok
metropolitan and peripheral areas. Data was collected from 306 male juveniles admitted to Training Schools
i.e. Ban Karuna, Ban Mudhita, Ban Ubekkha and the Youth Correction Institute. A questionnaire was used in
data collection. Statistical applications were Mean, Percentage, Standard Deviation, Analysis of Variance,
Independent Sample and Multiple Classification Analysis. The results of the study are summarized below.
1. Social Background. It was found that most samples admitted to the Youth Correction Institute had
a domicile in Bangkok, and were aged 20 - 23 years (average age was 21.92 years). They were aged 19 -21
years (average age was 20.04 years), at the time of offense. They were charged on possession for disposal of
Amphetamine offenses and were imprisoned 2 years and 1 month to 4 years (average imprisonment 3.88
years). They were commonly laborers and earned 4,001-8,000 baht (average monthly income was 9021.40
baht). They had acquired primary level education and were Buddhists whose parents cohabited. Their fathers
and mothers were commonly laborers. The residence was a slum and their home was owned by their
fathers/mothers/relatives. Most juveniles lived with their parents before committing the offense. Prior to this
arrest, they used drugs for 1 year and 1 month to 3 years (average duration that the juveniles used drugs was
2.70 years). The type of drug that juveniles used was Amphetamine.
2. Moral reasoning. This factor affected juveniles and youths’ drug abuse offenses.

4. Conduct disorder. This factor affected juveniles and youths’ drug abuse offenses.
5. Social bond. Involvement and belief component affected juveniles and youths’ drug abuse offenses.
6. Child-rearing. Child-rearing with control affected moral reasoning.
