The relationship between health locus of control, social support and foot care behaviors in diabetic foot ulcer patients
Abstract:
This study was a descriptive research aimed at exploring foot care behaviors,
health locus of control and social support in diabetic foot ulcer patients while
investigating the relationships between the health locus of control, social support and
foot care behaviors in diabetic foot ulcer patients. The duration of this study was from
April 2005 to October 2006 and the sample group consisted of type 2 diabetic patients
over 20 years old with foot ulcers who were treated at general surgical clinics, wound
dressing rooms, female and male surgical wards at Phraphutthabaj Hospital and
Saraburi Provincial Hospital. The sample group of 84 diabetic foot ulcer patients was
selected by inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data was collected by answering a
questionnaire and was analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation
and Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient.
The results were that the mean score for foot care behaviors was at a
moderate level ( = 1.14, S.D. = 0.79). The mean scores for the internal health locus
of control and the power of others health locus of control were at a high level ( =
2.53, S.D. = 0.70 and = 2.78, S.D. = 0.51, respectively) and the mean score of the
chance health locus of control was at a moderate level ( = 2.09, S.D. = 0.90). The
mean score for social support was at an optimum level ( = 3.61, S.D. = 1.03).
Furthermore, the internal and power of others health locus of control and social
support were positively and significantly correlated with good foot care behaviors (r =
0.532, p<0.05, r = 0.413, p<0.05 and r = 0.449, p<0.05, respectively).

These findings suggest that nurses should promote diabetes mellitus foot
ulcer patients to practice foot care behaviors regularly, and should promote the internal
health locus of control for patients’ competency in controlling foot ulcer. Furthermore,
nurses should promote cooperation among family members and other diabetes mellitus
foot ulcer patients in providing information on foot care which will lead to great
improvement in foot care behaviors
