Factors predicting suicidal behavior among senior high school students in Chainat province, Thailand

Abstract: Suicide is an undesirable behavior. It is a waste of life especially if it occurs with senior high school students in early adolescence : they are the future of the country and it must be a great and invaluable loss. There is an urgent need to understand the causes of the problem in order to solve this problem. This cross-sectional research aimed to study suicidal behavior, and factors relating to and predicting suicidal behavior of senior high school students in Chainat Province. The study group consisted of 950 students selected by using multi-stage sampling method. Data were collected using questionnaires from 15 August to 31 October, 2005. The data were analyzed by computing percentage, arithmetic means, standard deviation, Chi-square, Pearson’s Product Moment Coefficient, and multiple regression analysis by using Stepwise technique. The results of the study showed that in the 6 months preceding suicide, 54.1 percent of the students had shown suicidal behavior, 48.5 percent had suicidal thought, 3.1 percent had threatened suicide, and 2.5 percent had attempted suicide. The variables found to relate significantly to suicidal behavior of students (p≤0.05) were from highest to lowest, as follows : heart-breaking events (r=0.592), depression (r=0.537), personality (r=0.402), nurturing (r=-0.399), perfectionism (r=0.350), history of having attempted suicide in the last 12 months (r=0.321), imitating behavior from various media (r=0.302), substances use (r=0.179), and family history as related to suicide (r=0.168). When the predicting equation of students’ suicidal behavior was developed, it was found that there were 9 variables in the predicting equation and all of them together could have predicted students’ suicidal behavior in 53.1 percent of the cases. The predictable variables were, in order, as follows : heart breaking events, depression, nurturing, history of having attempted suicide in the last 12 months, personality, imitating behavior from various media, perfectionism, family history as related to suicide, and substances use. In order to prevent suicidal behavior among senior high school students, preventive measures should be done cooperatively and systematically. Starting from the measure for promoting and developing good relationship in the family, parents / guardians should observe their children’s changed behavior regularly. For schools, the development of lesson plans regarding problem management and suicidal behavior surveillance measures should be done. The government must have strict measures regarding presentation of suicidal behavior to the public by various media. For further research in order to get more clearness about this topic, the following items should be considered : recognition of the significance of the variable regarding accessibility to instruments for committing suicide, especially guns ; problem management and coping ; antisocial personality ; narcissistic personality ; internet ; cartoon magazines, genes, etc. The Qualitative research aiming to understand social and traditional contexts related to suicidal behavior of senior high school students is also recommended

Abstract: การฆ่าตัวตายเป็นสิ่งที่ไม่พึงปรารถนานับเป็นการสูญเสียทรัพยากรมนุษย์ไปโดยเปล่าประโยชน์ โดยเฉพาะหากเกิดกับ นักเรียนระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลายซึ่งเป็นวัยรุ่นตอนต้นและเป็นอนาคตของชาติ ย่อมเป็นความสูญเสียที่ยิ่งใหญ่และประมาณค่า มิได้ การทำความเข้าใจถึงสาเหตุของปัญหาเพื่อหาทางแก้ไขต้องดำเนินการโดยเร่งด่วน การวิจัยแบบภาคตัดขวางเพื่อศึกษา พฤติกรรมการฆ่าตัวตาย ปัจจัยที่มีความสัมพันธ์ และสามารถทำนายพฤติกรรมการฆ่าตัวตายของนักเรียนระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอน ปลาย จังหวัดชัยนาท จำนวน 950 คน ด้วยวิธีการสุ่มแบบหลายขั้นตอน ผู้วิจัยเก็บข้อมูลด้วยตนเองโดยใช้แบบสอบถาม ระหว่างวันที่ 15 สิงหาคม ถึง 31 ตุลาคม 2548 วิเคราะห์ด้วยสถิติร้อยละ ค่าเฉลี่ย ส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐาน ไคสแควร์ สัมประสิทธิ์สหสัมพันธ์ของ เพียร์สัน และการวิเคราะห์ถดถอยพหุคูณโดยวิธี stepwise ผลการศึกษา พบว่า ในช่วง 6 เดือนที่ผ่านมานักเรียนร้อยละ 54.1 มีพฤติกรรมการฆ่าตัวตาย จำแนกเป็นคิดที่จะฆ่าตัวตาย ร้อยละ 48.5 พูด/ขู่/มีท่าทีที่จะฆ่าตัวตายร้อยละ 3.1 และมีพฤติกรรมเคยพยายามฆ่าตัวตายร้อยละ 2.5 ตัวแปรที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับ พฤติกรรมการฆ่าตัวตายของนักเรียนอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ 0.05 เรียงลำดับจากมากไปน้อย มีดังนี้คือ เหตุการณ์สะเทือน ใจ (r = 0.592) ภาวะซึมเศร้า (r = 0.537) บุคลิกภาพ (r = 0.402) การอบรมเลี้ยงดู (r = -0.399) การเป็นบุคคลสมบูรณ์แบบ (r=0.350) ประวัติเคยพยายามฆ่าตัวตายภายใน 12 เดือนที่ผ่านมา (r=0.321) พฤติกรรมเลียนแบบสื่อต่างๆ (r=0.302) การใช้สาร เสพติด (r=0.179) และประวัติการมีบุคคลในครอบครัวเคยมีพฤติกรรมฆ่าตัวตาย (r=0.168) เมื่อสร้างสมการทำนายพฤติกรรมการ ฆ่าตัวตายของนักเรียน พบว่ามีตัวแปรในสมการทำนายจำนวน 9 ตัว และสามารถร่วมกันทำนายพฤติกรรมการฆ่าตัวตายในนักเรียน ระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลายได้ร้อยละ 53.1 เรียงลำดับตามตัวแปรที่ทำนายได้สูงไปต่ำ ดังต่อไปนี้คือ เหตุการณ์สะเทือนใจ ภาวะ ซึมเศร้า การอบรมเลี้ยงดู ประวัติเคยพยายามฆ่าตัวตายภายใน 12 เดือนที่ผ่านมา บุคลิกภาพ พฤติกรรมเลียนแบบสื่อต่าง ๆ การเป็น บุคคลสมบูรณ์แบบ ประวัติการมีบุคคลในครอบครัวเคยมีพฤติกรรมฆ่าตัวตาย และการใช้สารเสพติด สำหรับแนวทางในการป้องกันพฤติกรรมการฆ่าตัวตายในนักเรียนระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลาย ต้องดำเนินการ อย่างมี ส่วนร่วมและเป็นระบบ นับตั้งแต่ มาตรการสร้างเสริมและพัฒนาความสัมพันธ์ในครอบครัวโดยพ่อแม่ ผู้ปกครองควรหมั่นสังเกต พฤติกรรมที่เปลี่ยนแปลงของลูก โรงเรียนต้องพัฒนาแผนการสอนเรื่องการจัดการกับปัญหาและสร้างมาตรการเฝ้าระวังพฤติกรรม การฆ่าตัวตายในนักเรียน รัฐบาลต้องมีมาตรการที่เข้มงวดต่อการนำเสนอพฤติกรรมการฆ่าตัวตายของสื่อต่างๆต่อสาธารณะ สำหรับ การศึกษาวิจัยต่อไปเพื่อให้มีความชัดเจนต่อเรื่องนี้คือ การให้ความสำคัญกับตัวแปรการเข้าถึงเครื่องมือในการฆ่าตัวตายโดยเฉพาะ อาวุธปืน การจัดการและการเผชิญปัญหา บุคลิกภาพประเภทปรปักษ์ต่อสังคม หรือหลงตัวเอง สื่ออินเตอร์เน็ท หนังสือการ์ตูน และ มิติทางพันธุกรรม เป็นต้น การศึกษาเชิงคุณภาพเพื่อเข้าใจบริบทด้านสังคม และวัฒนธรรมที่เกี่ยวข้องกับพฤติกรรมการฆ่าตัวตายใน นักเรียนระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลาย
