The effect of music therapy on nausea and vomiting in pediatric cancer patients receiving chemotherapy
Abstract:
The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to investigate the effect of
music therapy on nausea and vomiting in pediatric cancer patients receiving
chemotherapy. The conceptual framework of this study was based on physiologic
mechanisms of nausea and vomiting and music therapy. Forty subjects were recruited
from Ramathibodi Hospital and Pramongkutklao Hospital between October 2005 and
April 2006 and divided into control and experimental groups. The subjects were aged
between 7-15 years , hospitalized for the first day, received high doses of
chemotherapy, and had received at least one cycle of chemotherapy. The control group
undertook the usual relaxing activities compared with the experimental group who
listened to classical music provided by the researcher. The treatment of music therapy
for the experimental group took 20 minutes for a session every 2 hours while they
were receiving chemotherapy for the first 8 hours. Nausea and vomiting was measured
according to The index of nausea and vomiting by Rhodes. All data were analyzed by
SPSS/FW program.
The results indicated that there were no statistical significant difference in nausea
and vomiting scores between the control and the experimental groups (p>.05).
Although the scores of nausea and vomiting of these groups were not significantly
differenct, the patients in the experimental group enjoyed the music, felt calm ,
relaxed , and were distracted from receiving chemotherapy. Thus, music therapy
would be useful during the chemotherapy of patients
