A contextual analysis of self-control, differrential association and routine activity theories of juvenile and youth forcible rape offenders
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to analyze cause of forcible rape among juvenile
and youth offenders in the context of self-control, differential association and routine
activity theories. Data was collected from 221 male juveniles admitted to Training Schools
i.e. Ban Karuna, Ban Mudhita, Ban Ubekkha and the Youth Correction Institute.
A questionnaire was used in data collection. Statistical applications were Mean, Percentage,
Standard Deviation, Analysis of Variance and Multiple Classification Analysis. The results
of the study are summarized below.
1. Social Background. It was found that most samples admitted to the Youth
Correction Institute had domicile in provinces, were aged 20 - 23 years (average age was
21.74 years) and were aged 17 - 18 years (average age was 17.71 years), at time of offense.
They had acquired primary level education and were Buddhists whose parents cohabited.
Their fathers and mothers were commonly laborers. The residential was often suburban
and their home was own by their fathers/mothers/relatives. Most juveniles lived with their
parents before committing the offense.
2. Self-Control. Most forcible rape offenders, personality had a impulsive
component, temper component, self-centered component and risk-taking component. This
implies a multidimensional character of self-control. Multidimensionality refers to the
capability of self-control components that can explain offense in different forms, and some
but not all components may be used to explain the basis of the crime.
3. Differential association. This factor affected the level of forcible rape offense.
4. Routine activity. This activity affected the level of forcible rape offense.
5. Child monitoring. Punishment as a child affected self-control.
This research recommends that women who wish to avoid being a crime victim
should be more careful when traveling or being alone in an isolated place; they should not
wear revealing clothes and be sure that their appearance does not entice men sexually.
Parents should teach children patience in their own habits in order to endure threatening
situations. If children do wrong, proper punishment is needed for them. Moreover, schools
must encourage the children and juveniles to attend the appropriately good activities in
order to protect them and discourage them from associating with gangs who break the law.
Lastly, law enforcement should be more effective. In addition, the obscene pornography
must be strictly eliminated.
