The development of web-based computer assisted instruction for Islamic studies : a case study on cleansing and purification in Islam
Abstract:
The tutorials as web-based computer assisted instruction (web-based CAI) have been developed for Islamic Studies courses in order to explain the “Cleansing & Purification in Islam” for first year highschool students. They incorporate all relevant instructional media including hypertext, text, pictures, animations, sounds, review questions and score records of students’ progress as supplemental tools to conventional teaching. The development of the web-based CAI also provided a new environment and learning paradigm. In addition, the aim of this study is to develop a prototype for further development of the course and other relevant courses.
The evaluation of the usage of web-based CAI for Islamic Studies courses was accomplished by a number of students of Matthayomsuksa at the Thamislam Tait School, Nonthaburi. They were divided into two equall subgroups: the controll group (learning using conventional teaching methods); and the experimental group (learning by using the web-based CAI to supplement teaching). The web-based program was evaluated by comparing the Pre-test and Post-test scores of both sample groups and by questionnaire regarding learners’satisfaction with the system.
Based on the evaluation results, the system slightly increased learning effectiveness. Moreover, it made students more motivated and enhanced interaction in the leassons providing valuable feedback.
