The relationship between food consumption and rate of weight gain in the third trimester among HIV infected pregnant women
Abstract:
The objective of this study was to study the relationship between food
consumption and rate of weight gain in the third trimester among HIV infected
pregnant women. The subjects were a sampling from HIV infected women who
attended Attended Care Unit at Bumrajnaradura Institute from December 1, 2004 to
May 31, 2005. The subjects were 20 cases who were willing to participate in this
study. Data were colleted by using questionnaire including food frequency
questionnaire and hospital records for investigating food pattern and pregnancy
history. Data were association analyzed by using Pearson’s product moment
correction and computer program for calculating the received energy from food
consumption (calorie/day).
Eighty percent of the samples had a normal rate of weight gain during the third
trimester (≥0.4 kg./week). 95 percent of samples had good food consumption practice
and 80 percent of samples consumed foods proportionately. Most of the samples ate
healthy food such as rice, milk, fruit, vegetables and meat. The average energy and
nutrient intake were more than Dietary Reference Intake for Thais (DRI) except iron,
vitamin A and thiamin. Additionally, it was found that quantity intake of protein,
riboflavin, calcium, iron and food consumption practice were positively significantly
associated with the rate of weight gain in the third trimester among HIV infected
pregnant women (p-value<0.05). Quantity intake of energy, carbohydrate, whole fat,
vitamin A, vitamin C, zinc and thiamin were not significantly associated with rate of
weight gain in the third trimester.
These findings suggest that the pregnant women want to keep their blood
result secret are with a rate of weight gained of less than 0.4 kg. /week. And also that
pregnant women who are infected, should increase their consumptions of meat, egg
yolks, vegetables, and milk. They are advised to get more food, drug supplement and
death practice from doctors, nurses and nutritionists.
