The expected role and actual role of the department of employment in promoting students employment in Bangkok
Abstract:
This research aimed to compare: 1) the expected role and the actual role of the Department of
Employment in promoting student employment from officials’ perceptions; 2) the expected role and
the actual role of the Department of Employment in promoting student employment from students’
perceptions; 3) officials’ perceptions and students’ perceptions of the expected and actual role of the
Department of Employment . This research also aimed to examine and identify the factors affecting
the actual and expected roles of the Department of Employment. The sample was divided into
3 groups: (1) 135 officials class 3-6 (2) 176 students and (3) 4 chief executives. The research
methodology consisted of questionnaires for the first 2 groups and interviews with the third group.
The data from the first 2 groups were processed by computerized program and evaluated by the
statistical means of percentage, frequency distribution, mean, standard deviation, t-test, One Way
Anova and Pearson’ Product Moment Correlation Coefficient.
The research results found that
1) The level of expected role was higher than actual role of the Department of Employment
from officials’ perception. 2) The level of expected role was higher than actual role of the Department
of Employment from students’ opinion. 3) The officials’ perception had positive relation with students’
opinion toward expected role and actual role of the Department of Employment with statistical
significance. 4) Officials’ gender, age , educational level, and professional experience did not relate to
either the expected role or the actual role of the Department of Employment. 5) Officials’ motivation
factors and knowledge factors related to expected role and actual role. 5) Students’ gender, age,
educational level, and professional experience did not relate to either the expected role or the actual role
of the Department of Employment. The overview of the results of interviewing executives showed that
the Department of Employment could succeed in their actual role in promoting student employment as
described in the mission and also respond to students’ needs as they had expected. However they
found the limitation of budget , personnel and equipments.
Recommendations derived from this study; 1) increase operational officers, equipment used in
the working process as well as more emphasize on public relation via an effective media; 2) provide
job placement with good quality related to students’ needs; 3) integrate activities among the
educational institutions and increase the cooperation between the ministries involved.
