Microbial air quality and infection control towards tuberculosis before and after intervention in a general hospital, Bangkok
Abstract:
An intervention study was conducted to compare the infection control towards tuberculosis including perception and practice of policy / plan, knowledge towards risk of TB infection and practice towards standard precaution related to TB prevention, and to assess microbial air quality in risk wards before and after an intervention program during June to December 2004.The study samples included 2 groups. The first group was 154 hospital personnel working in the risk wards and the second was 98 air samples collected from TB risk wards. Studied hospital personnel were interviewed by using a structured questionnaire. Air samples were collected by Millipore Air Tester for investigating the total bacterial count and fungal count. The intervention program included one-day training program on TB infection control, use of appropriate protective barriers and environmental control practice. Results revealed that after the intervention program, the perception and practice mean scores towards TB infection control policy / plan, the knowledge mean scores towards risk of TB infection and the practice mean scores towards standard precaution related to TB prevention were significantly higher than those before intervention, (p<0.001). The mean of bacterial counts of air samples collected from the medical out-patient department and the mean of fungal counts collected from the emergency room after intervention were significantly lower than those before intervention, p=0.016 and p<0.001, respectively.
