Factors influencing on paternal developmental tasks perceived by husbands of the primigravidarum pregnant women in Suphanburi province
Abstract:
If husbands could perform developmental tasks effectively during their
wives’ pregnances, they would be happy and confident in themselves, and this
would enable wives to undertake their new role with confidence and spiritual
support. This research aimed to determine the influence of sex role identity, role
strain, social support, age, education level, occupation, family income, and desire
for children on paternal developmental tasks perceived by husbands of
primigravidarum pregnant women in Suphanburi Province.
The subjects who participated in the study were 150 husbands of pregnant
women with purposive sampling who received the antenatal service at hospitals in
Suphanburi Province. Data were collected using a questionnaire. Descriptive
statistics used were frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The
analytical statistics comprised t-test, ANOVA analysis of variance, Chi-square,
Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
Results of the study showed that out of four characteristics of sex role
identity of overall and each aspect, masculinity was at a highest level. Overall role
strain was at a fairly low level and social support was at a fairly good level. Also,
the paternal developmental task was at a fairly good level. Furthermore, three
influential factors of paternal developmental task were sex role identity, role
strain, and social support. Those factors could explain 50.5 percent of variance of
paternal developmental task of primigravidarum. As a result, there were
significant relationships between role strain, social support and paternal
developmental tasks (r = .427, and .599, p < 0.01, respectively)
The results of this study suggest that nurses should advise and support
first-child fathers. Moreover, nurses should realize the significance of the
assessment of the characteristics, role strain, and giving social support as it could
enhance effectiveness of the paternal developmental tasks during pregnancy
