An effectiveness of the sexual communication program between the mothers and adolescent daughters
Abstract:
Sexual communication between the mother and adolescent daughter is an
effective tool to prevent risky sexual behavior and related problems. The purpose of
this quasi-experimental study was to examine the effectiveness of the sexual
communication (SC) program between the mothers and adolescent daughters.
The sample comprised 86 mothers (44 mothers in an experimental group, and 42
mothers in a comparison group) whose daughters were studying in Matayomsuksa 1,
aged 11-14 years, in Meaung district, Phetchabun province. The instrument for this
study consisted of 9 sexual communication sessions with applying the concepts of
self-efficacy and participatory learning. The instruments for data collection consisted
of 5 questionnaires: socio-demographics, sexual knowledge, attitude toward sexual
communication and practice of sexual communication and self-report. Data collection
was conducted over three periods (before, immediately after the intervention and one
month follow up). Statistical analysis was performed by using percentage, mean,
standard deviation, independent t-test, paired t-test, one way ANOVA and
R-MANOVA.
Results revealed that the mothers in the experimental group had higher mean
scores on sexual knowledge, attitude towards sexual communication, and practice of
sexual communication at immediately and one month follow up after the intervention
than before the intervention and also the comparison group (p-value< .001).
The longer the SC program lasted, the better the mean scores of the mothers on sexual
knowledge, attitude toward sexual communication, and practice of sexual
communication. Life experience, peer role model, and self reports of the mothers
were among the most effective methods in developing perception and practice of
sexual communication. Most of the mothers felt comfortable to talk about sexual
development, personal hygiene practice, gender role, sex values and personal skills.
However, most of the mothers were uncomfortable to talk about sexual relationship,
contraception, and STIs and AIDS prevention with their daughters because their
daughters were too young and they felt unnecessary to talk about these issues too
soon.
The results of this study indicated an appropriate tool in developing the pattern
of sexual communication that could develop communication skills of mothers.
Regarding sexual communication, mothers should select contents, which are specific
to age and sexual development, in order to decrease risky behavior among female
adolescents.
