Abstract:
This research aimed to study the Massachusetts Youth Screening Instrument
Version 2 (MAYSI-2) to assist juvenile justice facilities in identifying youths 10-12
years old who may have special mental health needs. Internal consistency reliability,
content validity, discrimination of MAYSI-2 was examined. This instrument consists
of 7 scales: Alcohol/Drug Use, Angry-irritable, Depressed-Anxious, Somatic
Complaints, Suicide Ideation, Thought Disturbance and Traumatic Experience of
MAYSI-2 were examined. The subjects for this study were 280 male juveniles who
had be sentenced to participate in an occupational training and rehabilitation
program in Ban Karuna, Ban Mutita training school.
The results revealed that MAYSI-2 has a content validity and internal
consistency reliability range from 0.30 to 0.77 and the reliability of the of MAYSI-2 is
high at 0.79. The discriminant power was analyzed by comparing the mean of 27%
of the low and high samples with independent t-test. Most items were found to be
significantly different at p< 0.05, .01 and .001 except three items.
The results suggest that MAYSI-2 should be fairly useful as a screen for
mental health in juveniles at training school.
