A Comparative study of the ozone corona discharge generator and the in-house designed uv ozone generator for controlling of bacteria in air
Abstract:
This research was an experimental study. The purpose of this study was to
compare the efficiency of an in-house ultraviolet (UV) ozone generator and a corona
discharge ozone generator. The in-house UV ozone generator based on simple and
affordable technology, is composed of a base box and ozone chamber. The Base box
(30 cm width, 10 cm height, 30 cm length) contains electronic ballast, air pump and
timer. The ozone chamber is made from stainless steel. Its cylinder (8-cm diameter
and 25 cm height) inside contains an ozone lamp. Its average ozone generating rate is
18 mg/hour. The corona discharge ozone generator is composed of a plastic base box
containing corona discharge ceramic electrodes with generation rate of 20-100
mg/hour. Efficiency tests of the two ozone generators in reducing airborne bacteria
were determined in a 0.9 m3 experimental chamber which was set up at On Nut waste
transfer station near the dump site. The air was purged into the chamber for 15
minutes. The air samples were collected for air borne bacteria analysis before and after
operating the ozone generator at 4 ozone concentrations (0.08 - 0.1, 0.9 - 1.2, 5.9 - 6.3
and 9.5 - 10.0 ppm) for the corona discharge ozone generator and 2 concentrations
(0.08 - 0.1 and 0.9 – 1.2 ppm) for the in-house UV ozone generator.
The results revealed that the highest efficiency of the in-house UV ozone
generator for reducing bacteria was 69.8% at 0.9 to 1.2 ppm ozone which was
discordant with the study hypothesis. The corona discharge ozone generator was
94.5% at 9.5 to 10.0 ppm ozone. There was no significant difference of effectiveness
in reducing bacteria in the chamber between the in-house designed UV ozone
generator and the corona discharge ozone generator (p-value = 0.173).
