Application of self-efficacy theory and the transtheoretical model to exercise programme for menopausal women in Chiang-Mai province
Abstract:
This research utilized the techniques of the technical action research approach to study the effects of a constructed health education program developed from the application of Self- efficacy Theory and Transtheoretical Model to the exercise program for 7 menopausal women in Chiang Mai province. The level of readiness for exercise activity of the sample group was firstly classified using Transtheoretical Model before the following steps of the Application of Self-efficacy Theory: interviewing of fundamental information, focus group, participatory observation, questionnaire, laboratory and physiology test of the sample group at the beginning, during and end of the program. The duration of the study lasted 28 weeks from May 1st, 2002 to November 11th, 2002. The data were then evaluated and analyzed through the statistical methods including frequency distribution, percentage, mean and standard deviation, one-way ANOVA, paired t-test, and qualitative data analysis by using content analysis. The result from the study showed that, at the end of the program, the level of knowledge concerning exercise, outcome expectation, exercise behavior, blood cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and maximum oxygen uptake of the sample group had improved significantly. However, no significant changes could be detected in the level of perceived self-efficacy, serum triglyceride, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, pulse at rest, flexibility, and hand muscle strength. In conclusion, the health education program gives some benefit to menopausal women. Any way, Some parameters from the study have no significant changes such as BMI. Parameters for further study should be diet related.
