The effect of immediately postpartum parents-infant interaction promoting program on maternal-infant and paternal-infant attachment of cesarean mothers
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of an immediate postpartum
parent-infant interaction promotion program on maternal-infant and paternal-infant
attachment in families with Cesarean mothers. The samples were 60 pregnant women
who were admitted for Cesarean Section at Ramathibodi Hospital, their husbands and
healthy infants. The period of this study was between June and September 2004. The
samples of this study were purposively selected and were randomly divided into
control and experimental groups. Firstly, 30 triads in the control group received the
usual nursing care from the staff nurses, and 30 triads in the experimental group
received the immediate postpartum parent-infant interaction promotion program from
the researcher.
The results of this study showed that the paternal-infant attachment mean score of
the fathers who received the immediate postpartum parent-infant interaction
promotion program was statistically significantly higher than those who did not
(p<.05). In contrast, the maternal-infant attachment mean score of the Cesarean
mothers who received the immediate postpartum parent-infant interaction promotion
program was not statistically significantly higher than those who did not. From the
results of this study, the immediate postpartum parent-infant interaction promotion
program should be provided by the nursing service in order to promote parent-infant
attachment and to develop the quality of nursing service, especially for fathers.
