Abstract:
The objectives of this research were to study perception of professional
advancement of female and male graduate students of Mahidol University during 1988-
1998 and professional advancement of female and male graduate students. The researcher
controlled the variables of other personal characteristics such as age, present educational
qualification, major, marital status, present position, working duration, income, job
satisfaction, and job characteristics. 400 graduate students of Mahidol University were the
sample group of this research.
The research results found that female and male graduate students similarly
perceived professional advancement on salary increase rate, experiences of training,
observing work, furthering study, promotion opportunity, and job satisfaction and success.
The main objective of this research was to study that the factors of gender correlate with
professional advancement in various aspects by controlling other factors using Statistical
Control by Multiple Regression Analysis. However, the research results found that gender
did not effect perception of working advancement. The results of analyzing other variables
were as follows; the variables which positively correlated with professional advancement in
general were income, job satisfaction, job characteristics. The variables which negatively
correlated with professional advancement in general were the fields of Linguistics, Culture,
and Education. The variable which positively correlated with the salary increase rate was
income. The variables which negatively correlated with the salary increase rate were
working duration and education level of master’s degree. The variables which positively
correlated with experiences of training, observing work, and furthering study were the field
of clinical medical science, working duration, and job characteristics. The variables which
positively correlated with promotion were working duration, income, job satisfaction, and
job characteristics. The variable which negatively correlated with promotion was age. The
variables which positively correlated with job satisfaction and success were job
characteristics and job satisfaction.
Research recommendations involve development of advancement by salary
increase and finding the methods of encouraging more job satisfaction for personnel. As
women tend to have more professional advancement than men, it is necessary to follow, and
continue to study such issues. There should be the study of people whose educational level
is lower than graduate school or there should be the study of people graduating from the
faculty where there are few women such as Faculty of Engineering in order to see whether
gender difference correlates with advancement in various aspects.
