Factors influencing the utilization of non-timber forest products in communities around Phuluang wildlife sanctuary
Abstract:
The objectives of this thesis were to study economic and social issues as
well as to examine the utilization of Non-timber Forest Products – NTFPs. To
analyze economic value of NTFPs of villages located around Phuluang Wildlife
Sanctuary including studying economic and social factors affecting the quantity of
utilization of NTFPs.
The samples were classified into 6 categories, which were bamboo shoots,
mushrooms, herbs, wild fruits, wild vegetables and wild animals. Data were
collected from 99 samples selected from the villages. Also, semi-structured
interviews as well as notices and surveys were used with villagers who usually use
NTFPs in order to create the crop calendar of each type of NTFPs. The SPSS/PC
computer program was then employed to analye the data. Statistical tools were
composed of arithmetic means, percentage, standard deviation, Stepwise Multiple
Regression Analysis and descriptive analysis.
The results were that the first 3 orders of NTFPs that were utilized the most
were wild fruits, bamboo shoots and wild vegetables with a net value per year
equal to 22,044.30 kilograms, 12,863.80 kilograms and 6,986.55 kilograms
respectively. The results also indicated that the first 3 orders of NTFPs classified as
having the most net value were wild fruits, mushrooms and wild animals that had a
net value per year equal to 442,924.30 baht, 334,507 baht and 164,842.50 baht
respectively and/or the total net value equal to 1,173,115 baht per year. The result
of the Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis between dependent variables and
independent variables indicated that major agricultural products prices had a
relation to quantity of utilization of wild animals, wild fruits and bamboo shoots.
Land tenure had a relation to the quantity of utilization of mushrooms, wild
animals and wild fruits, and household members and age had a relation to quantity
of utilization of bamboo shoots at 0.05 level of significance.
