Plastination preserves in traumatic brains for medico-legal evidence

Abstract: Traumatic and normal brains were preserved under two conditions. Normal brains were fixed in 70% and then in 95% alcohol. This was followed by 5%, 10% and 20% formalin, the traumatic brains were fixed in 95% alcohol and 10% formalin, respectively. Only 10% formalin fixed brain specimens were processed through Biodure S-10 plastination method. All pre and post plastinated specimens were measured in several reference points on the surface, and degree of shrinkage determined. The normal brain degree of shrinkage was on average 12.72-18.22% in 70% alcohol, was on average 18.89-40.46% in 95% alcohol, was on average 3.38-5.78% in 5% 4.0-6.67% in 10% and 5.91-8.0% in 20% formalin, respectively. The statistic is different significantly,p <0.05. Traumatic brain degree of shrinkage was on average 19.37-37.86% in 95% alcohol, was on average 4.58-7.51% in 10% formalin and was on average 5.8-12.5% in plastination method. The finished plastinated brains are dry to touchable, odorless, non-toxic and remain original shape, reasonably close in color and consistency, resists deterioration and can be stored at room temperature indefinitely. This research studies demonstrated that plastination in traumatic brain is most likely a suitable method and superior to those preserved in formalin for medico-legal evidence and teaching purpose.

Abstract: เนื้อเยื่อสมองถูกแบ่งออกเป็น 2 กลุ่ม กลุ่มที่ 1 เนื้อเยื่อสมองปกติ ถูกดองด้วยน้ำยาแอลกอฮอล์ที่มีความเข้มข้น 70 เปอร์เซ็นต์, 95 เปอร์เซ็นต์ และฟอร์มาลิน 5 เปอร์เซ็นต์, 10 เปอร์เซ็นต์ , 20 เปอร์เซ็นต์ กลุ่มที่ 2 เนื้อเยื่อสมองที่ได้รับอันตราย ถูกดองด้วยน้ำยาแอลกอฮอล์ 95 เปอร์เซ็นต์, ฟอร์มาลิน 10 เปอร์เซ็นต์ และ การกำซาบด้วยสารพลาสติกชนิดซิลิโคน ทำการวัดขนาดบนเนื้อเยื่อสมองจำนวนทั้งหมด 10ตำแหน่ง พบว่าในแอลกอฮอล์ 70 เปอร์เซ็นต์ มีอัตราการหดตัวเฉลี่ยร้อยละ 12.72-18.22 ,ที่น้ำยาดองแอลกอฮอล์ความเข้มข้น95เปอร์เซ็นต์ มีอัตราการหดตัวเฉลี่ยร้อยละ 18.89-40.46 น้ำยาดองฟอร์มาลินความเข้มข้น5เปอร์เซ็นต์มีอัตราการหดตัวเฉลี่ยร้อยละ3.38-5.78,น้ำยาดองฟอร์มาลินความเข้มข้น10เปอร์เซ็นต์มีอัตราการหดตัวเฉลี่ยร้อยละ4.0-6.67และที่น้ำยาดองฟอร์มาลินความเข้มข้น20เปอร์เซ็นต์มีอัตราการหดตัวเฉลี่ยร้อยละ5.91-8.0 ตามลำดับ แตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ p<0.05-0.001,อัตราการหดตัวของเนื้อเยื่อสมองที่ได้รับอันตรายในน้ำยาดองแอลกอฮอล์ความเข้มข้น95เปอร์เซ็นต์ มีอัตราการหดตัวเฉลี่ยร้อยละ 19.37-37.86,น้ำยาดองฟอร์มาลินความเข้มข้น10 เปอร์เซ็นต์มีอัตราการหดตัวเฉลี่ยร้อยละ 4.58-7.51 และเนื้อเยื่อที่ผ่านขบวนการกำซาบด้วยสารพลาสติกมีอัตราการหดตัวเฉลี่ยร้อยละ 5.8-12.5และ จากการศึกษาพบว่าเนื้อเยื่อสมองปกติและที่ได้รับอันตรายเมื่อผ่านขบวนการกำซาบด้วยสารพลาสติกมีลักษณะแห้งเหมือนธรรมชาติ ไม่มีกลิ่น คงทนถาวรสามารถจับต้องได้อย่างใกล้ชิด การกำซาบด้วยสารพลาสติกเป็นวิธีที่เหมาะสมสามารถนำมาใช้ในการเก็บรักษาพยานวัตถุจากศพเพื่อใช้ในกระบวนการยุติธรรมและใช้ในงานการเรียนการสอนได้อย่างถาวร
