Development of a sampling method for 4-vinyl-1-cyclohexene in air
Abstract:
The use of the substance 4-vinyl-1-cyclohexene in chemical processes has
increased and the by-product of 4-vinyl-1-cyclohexene is generated in
polybutadiene production. The evaluation of 4-vinyl-1-cyclohexene exposure in the
working environment of an operator is limited, and there is no reference method for
sampling and analysis of 4-vinyl-1-cyclohexene vapor in the air.
The purpose of this research was to develop an applicable sampling and
analytical method to determine worker’s exposure to airborne 4-vinyl-1-
cyclohexene and to evaluate the performance of this method. A solid sorbent tube,
containing two sections (100 mg in the front and 50 mg in the back) of activated
coconut-shell charcoal was chosen for sampling 4-vinyl-1-cyclohexene vapor. The
suitable air flow rates for sampling of 4-vinyl-1-cyclohexene varied from 0.1 to 2.0
L/min. The adsorption capacity and desorption efficiency of the charcoal tube for 4-
vinyl-1-cyclohexene were studied. The reliability of the method for sampling and
analysis was also evaluated. The suitable air flow rate was 0.3 to 1.5 L/ min. The
average adsorption capacity of 4-vinyl-1-cyclohexene adsorbed by the 100-mg
activated carbon was 0.2134 mg. The 4-vinyl-1-cyclohexene samples were stable
for 7 days at room temperature or 21 days in a refrigerated condition. The 4-vinyl-
1-cyclohexene in the charcoal samples was desorbed with carbon disulfide and
analyzed by gas chromatography equipped with flame ionization detector. The limit
of detection was 0.04427 ng. The average percent desorption efficiency of 4-vinyl-
1-cyclohexene ranged from 90.45% to 97.04%. The overall accuracy and precision
of the sampling and analysis method of 4-vinyl-1-cyclohexene were 10.14% and
5.17%, respectively. They were acceptable to the NIOSH sampling and analytical
criteria.
The results showed that this sampling and analytical method can be used for
monitoring of 4-vinyl-1-cyclohexene in the air. Furthermore, this method can be
applied in the rubber industry.
