Abstract:
This thesis studies the naming of Buddhist Temples in Bangkok which is related to the people’s culture, environment and the use of language. This study investigates the name of four hundred and forty name of Buddhist Temple all over Bangkok. The documentary and field research are conducted in collecting the data
From the study, a Buddhist temple normally has two names – the local name and the official name. The local name refers to the original name known by the people in the area. The official name is received after the temple restoration by the government. The local name reflects the environment while the official name refers to the name of the people or group of people who partook in the building or restoration. . Moreover, this study also reveals the difference in the use language of both meanings,– the local names are normally in Thai, whereas the majority of the official names are in Pali-Sanskrit .
This study shows that the Buddhist temples reflects the social value that influences the thought and beliefs of the Thai people in different periods
