A study of Pong-Lang ensemble in the secondary schools in Kalasin province, Thailand : school cluster 1
Abstract:
The objectives of this research were: 1) to study the situation of Pong-Lang ensemble in
secondary schools under the jurisdiction of the General Education Department in Kalasin Province, and
2) to study problems of Pong-Lang Ensemble. Qualitative research was done by studying related
literature and data from observations and interviews during 2002 to 2003.
The Pong-Lang ensemble, as a curricular activity is organized in club style focusing on
providing service, participation in community, and conservation of Esarn art and culture. These
activities were in accordance with Ministry of Exucation policies and curriculum objectives. The work
plans were performed to improve the music bands. There was one teacher per school. Every school
orgonined activities time during class time. Every school needed better musical instruments. The
budget was obtained from the educational maintenance money from tuition and fees. There was
participation both in school and outside school as well as competitions
It was found that the major problems were that the musical instruments were not sufficient, the
teachers had too much teaching load, the practicie place was not suitable, and there was too little
budget. There were a variety of other problems which teachers and controllers of the ensembles could
solve.
The Pong-Lang ensemble is a traditional musical group found in north-east Thailand which
uses drums and xylophones. This ensemble is used to teach music and culture in schools in the region
