Development of computer-assisted tutorial instruction for introduction to photography course
Abstract:
The tutorial CAI was developed for “The Introduction to Photography” course
to incorporate all relevant instructional media including texts, pictures, animations,
and sounds in a single set. The deployment of the CAI was not only to minimize
problems associated with inadequate learning media and facilities at Phuket
Vocational College but also to substitute live instruction whenever the instructor was
not available to conduct the regular course. In addition, it may subsequently be served
as the prototype for further development of this course and/or other courses offered at
the college.
Learning effectiveness of the tutorial CAI was evaluated by comparing its
learning results with those of the conventional instructional method. The experiment
was achieved by the volunteer group of 30 students from any of all certificates in
Vocational Education (Paw Waw Chaw) levels and departments. They were divided
equally into two subgroups: the experimental group (learning from the tutorial CAI)
and the controlled group (learning by conventional instructing method). Based on the
experimental result of the pre-test and post-test using the T-test statistical method at
0.01 significant level, there appeared a favourable learning progress for both groups.
However, the comparison of the post-test score of the two groups revealed no
significant difference in learning effectiveness. In other words, both groups of
students produced comparatively similar results in learning effectiveness. This was
due mainly to the limitation on sample selection and the experimental environment.
