Employment situation for persons with disabilities in Thailand
Abstract:
The objectives of this research are to 1) study the demographic and
socioeconomic characteristics of persons with disabilities, 2) study factors relating to
the employment of person with disabilities, and 3) compare income between the
persons with disabilities and the persons without disabilities. This research is
quantitative research using data from the Health and Welfare Survey 2002, of the
National Statistics Office. The population under study are persons with one type of
disability, aged 15 years and over.
Regarding age-sex structure of persons with disabilities, the majority of persons
with disabilities are males (59.9%), aged 60 years and over (33.9%). The highest
disability rate is among those 60 years and over. The majority of persons with
disabilities are married (41.4%), and have completed a primary level of education
(55.9%). The highest proportion of persons with disabilities is in the Northeast. There
are more persons with disabilities living in rural areas than urban areas.
Regarding types of disability, young people (15-24 years old) mainly have
intellectual or learning disabilities while working age persons and the older persons
have physical and locomotive disabilities.
For the 315,511 working persons with disabilities, the majority are own account
workers (41.3%), engaged in the agricultural sector (58.6%). Persons with disabilities
employed by the private sector total 28.2%, and only 3.1% in the government sector.
The logistic regression shows that sex, age, marital status, educational background,
living place, disability type, and periods of disability affected the employment of the
persons with disabilities, with a statistical significance at the 0.01 level. The persons
with hearing or communication disabilities and the persons who have been disabled
for 40–59 years have the highest probability of working. Regarding income inequality,
it is found that persons with disabilities have much lower average monthly income
than persons without disabilities.
