The effects of supportive nursing care and upright positioning during labor on labor pain, duration of labor and Apgar scores of newborn in the first-time mothers
Abstract:
The purpose of this quasi-experimental research is to determine the
effects of supportive nursing and upright positioning during labor on labor pain,
duration of labor and Apgar scores in the first-time mothers. This study was based
on Hodnett’s concept of supportive nursing care and, the upright positioning during
labor. Purposive sampling was composed of 60 first-time mothers who gave birth at
Mukdaharn Hospital. They were divided into two groups: experimental and control
group (n=30).
The data were collected using three instruments: the Personal Data
Questionnaire and Labor Record Form, the Visual Analogue Scale and Position
Observation Form. Data was analyzed with SPSS Program by percentage, mean,
standard deviation, chi-square and independent t-test
The results of the study showed that labor pain in the experimental group
was significantly less than that in the control group (p<.05). Duration of labor and
Apgar scores in the experimental group was not significantly different from those in
the control group (p>.05). The results of the study suggested that supportive nursing
care and upright positioning during labor can help to reduce perception of labor
pain.
