Stress and quality of work life of government officials in Srithanya hospital
Abstract:
Stress and quality of work life are recognized as having direct and indirect
effects on individuals and service quality depending upon internal and external factors.
The main objective of this cross-sectional survey research was to study personal
characteristics affecting stress and quality of work life of government officials in
Srithanya Hospital. Predicting factors and relationships between the stress and quality
of work life were also determined by using different statistical tests including Pearson
Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, t-test, and One-way Analysis of Variance. A
total of 206 government officials in Srithanya Hospital were selected by Krejcie and
Morgan Formula for self-administered questionnaires.
It was found that the majority of respondents were female (76.7%), aged
between 41-50 years old (44.2%), followed by 31-40 years old (26.7%). Over half had
a degree or equivalent (52.9%). Most of them were married (65.0%) and worked as
psychiatric nurse officials (68.4%). The majority had working experience of 11-30
years (77.7%) with position classification rank of 6-7 (58.3%). More than half
(54.4%) had been posted in patient contact units. Their average levels of stress and
quality of work life were low and moderate respectively. Sex, age, education, marital
status, working experience, positions, position classification, and work units were not
significantly related to stress and quality of work life at p-value < 0.05. However, high
achievement and good progress in their career could predict the quality of work life at
14.6 % with a negative relationship to stress (p-value = 0.001). It is suggested from the
study that hospital administrators put more emphasis on career advancement and
welfare of officials in order to improve the level of quality of work life and reduce
stress in the workplace by trying to balance the work load and put the right person in
the right job.
