Stress coping behaviour among workers in a food and beverage factory in Nakornpathom province
Abstract:
This research was to study stress, work experience, personalities, social
support, self esteem, positive belief and social skill, stress coping behaviour, and
factors related to stress coping behaviour among workers in the fruit and pineapple
production line in a food and beverage factory in Nakornpathom province. A
questionnaire was used in data collection and distributed to 260 workers. Statistical
applications were percentage, means, standard deviation and chi-square.
Over three-quarters of the workers were female and the average age was 29.
Over 60% had primary education fast over half earned 4,001-5,000 baht a month and
20% earned more than 5,000 baht. The proportion of married and single were similar.
More than half of the workers faced a normal state of stress and had 1-3 years of
workplace experience. Around three-quarters had type A personality with high social
support, moderate self esteem and positive belief. Most had a high level of social skill
and used direct methods to cope with stress. Factors positively relating to coping with
stress were strong social support, positive belief and good social skill. The degree of
stress, the length of work experience, personality type and level of self esteem were
not related to stress coping behavior.
It is recommended that the government should seriously promote and
publicize activities of Mental Health Department more. Factory executives should
financially support workers facing troubles. The managers or supervisors should allow
discussion, counseling and analyze working problems with workers more. Also,
family members should help in handling stress correctly and the production line
workers should control stress to stay at the normal level.
