A study of music management in the student activity period in secondary schools, Roi-et province, Thailand
Abstract:
The success of music activity depends on good management. The objectives
of the research were to study the status and problems of the management of music
activities in a school activity period for secondary school students in Roi-Et focusing
on six factors: planning, processing, personnel, budget, musical instrument and
room, and evaluation. Sixty-five music teachers each from a different secondary
school in Roi-Et, selected by a purposive random sampling technique, filled out
questionnaires.
The management of music activities: 1) Planning: 91% of the music teachers
indicated that they planned music activities, and 72% of the music teachers claimed
to offer the students an opportunity to participate in the planning. 2) Public relations:
88% claimed that they announced music activities to the students, and 82% said that
they surveyed students' needs and abilities. 3) Personnel: 25% of teachers are experts
in music, while 85% of the schools need a music expert, with 35% needing a
specialist in Thai music. 4) Budget: 82% claimed that schools have a shortage of
budget, while 55% claimed the budget is donated by the public. 5) Musical
instruments and rooms: 31% of the teachers indicated that their schools have a
shortage of musical instruments, and 60% indicated a shortage of rooms for music
activities. 6) Evaluation : All evaluation of student music performance was reported
to have been done in a music activity period, and 84% of the music teachers
indicated that they allow students to participate in evaluation.
Music teachers are doing well in planning, procedure, personnel, budget and
assessment, but they need more support, especially concerning musical instruments
and rooms.
