Development of a solid waste management information system for the Pollution Control Department
Abstract:
The objective of this research is to study, analyze, design, and develop a
prototype of a solid waste management information system for the Solid Waste and
Night Soil Division, Waste and Hazardous Substance Management Bureau, Pollution
Control Department (PCD).
The system development process entailed user requirement studies, a review of
the literature on solid waste management, analysis and design to systems by applying
structure methodology, database design by applying relational database model, and
programming. Microsoft Access 97, Visual Basic 6.0, Seagate Crystal Report 8.5, and
MapObject LT component are the tools which were used in the study.
The result of the information system development is a prototype of solid waste
management information system for the PCD. This information system is able to store,
edit, and query solid waste management data of all municipalities in Thailand. It is able
to rapidly produce detailed and summary reports in the format of tables, charts, and maps
according to user requirements and it reduces workload of PCD’s officials. The
evaluation of user satisfaction found that most users were satisfied with the accuracy,
ease, rapidity, and completeness of the information system and that the information
supports their work and decision-making.
