Cost and unit cost analysis of neuro-surgical intensive care unit in Ratchaburi Hospital fiscal year 2002
Abstract:
The purpose of this descriptive research was to analyze the cost and the unit cost
of the Neuro-Surgical Intensive Care Unit in Ratchaburi Hospital for fiscal year 2002 and the
unit cost for four disease groups : Intracerebral haemorrhage from stroke, Intracerebral
haemorrhage from accident, Brain tumor and Spinal injury. The data were collected from 1
October 2001-30 September 2002. The population was Neuro-Surgical Intensive Care Unit
(NSICU) and fifteen supportive cost centers. For the indirect cost, a direct distribution method
was used. The instrument used in this study were data collecting forms which were developed
according to the components of all cost.
The study revealed that the total direct cost of NSICU was 4,505,615.48 baht, the
ratio of the total direct cost to labor cost, material cost and capital cost was 75.66:12.09:12.26.
The full cost was 7,809,773.89 baht, the ratio of full cost to the direct cost and the indirect
cost was 57.69:42.31. The average unit cost was 2,700.48 baht per day and 91,879.69 baht per
case. For 4 disease groups in NSICU, the unit cost of Intracerebral haemorrhage from stroke,
Intracerebral haemorrhage from accident, Brain tumor and Spinal injury was 2,727.01,
2,692.29, 4,464.06 and 2,307.39 baht per day respectively, and 127,301.62, 50,599.26,
17,856.23 and 311,497.62 baht per case respectively.
From the study results and experiences obtained during the study, the
researcher recommends that the results from this study be used to plan and
appropriate budget allocation, by considering the total number of the activities and the
setting a clear target. The unit cost was a tool for checking the utilization of the
resources, budget and management strategy. To be able to see the trend and forecast
the proper utilization of the resources, the study should be an on-going process and
conducted every year
