Lead and nickel removal from battery industry wastewater using ground fish scales
Abstract:
Water pollution is one of the environmental problems in Thailand. Heavy
metals in wastewater are of great concern especially for lead and nickel which exert
adverse effects involving neurological, hematological, and gastrointestinal systems.
There are many ways to remove lead and nickel from wastewater, but most of them
are expensive. Using materials from some wastes may be able to reduce the cost. The
utilization of waste material like fish scales, an alternative adsorbent biomaterial, was
studied, due to its largely available wastes and ability to reduce toxicity of polluted
water by removal of toxic metallic ions.
The main objective of this study was to determine the optimum conditions for
the use of ground fish scales for removing lead and nickel from battery wastewater.
The experiment was conducted using the jar test by varying ground fish scale doses of
30, 40, and 50 g with pH levels of 8.0, 9.0, and 10.0, and the settling times of 2, 3, and
4 hours.
The optimum removal conditions were at the ground fish scale dose of 30 g,
pH level of 8.0, and the settling time of 2 hours. Under these conditions the lead and
nickel removal efficiencies were 99.20 and 98.47% and suspended solids generated
was 28.67 mg/l. Considering the overall levels of all the effluent concentrations,
heavy metals (lead and nickel) and suspended solids, they can be made to comply with
the standards of the Ministry of Industry of Thailand through the use of ground fish
scales.
