Factors related to paternal role concerning sex education of male adolescents in Muang district, Tak province
Abstract:
The objectives of this survey–research were to study paternal role concerning
sex education of male adolescents and relations between father’s factors, family’s
factors and paternal perceived self-efficacy. The population was 315 fathers who
had sons studying in grade 7–9 in Secondary School, Elementary Education
Department, Ministry of Education in Muang District, Tak Province. The data were
collected by a self-administered questionnaire during May 1–September 31, 2002.
Statistics used for data analysis were frequency, mean, percentage, standard
deviation, Chi-square and Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient.
Results showed that two-thirds of subjects (65.1 percent) had a moderate level
of paternal role in sex education of male adolescents. The levels of the five aspects
of the role concerning sex education were as follows: sociology was at the highest
level; and psychology, hygiene, principle of sex education and physical and sexual
biology were at the lowest level. The factors significantly associated with paternal
role were father’s factors: knowledge of sex education and attitude toward sex
education (P-value<0.001); family’s factors: family income (P-value=0.003) and
sexual relationship between parents (P-value<0.001); and paternal perceived selfefficacy
role concerning sex education of male adolescents (P-value<0.001). The
factors which were not associated with paternal role concerning sex education of
male adolescents were age, education, occupation, source of sex education which
the father had received, experience in sexually transmitted diseases, type of family,
number of children and number of hours talking with their adolescent sons each day.
This study suggests that fathers should play a promoting role in providing all
four aspects of sex education to adolescent sons, and should have good
understanding of the principles of sex education, especially of providing correct
knowledge, and promoting a good attitude to fatherhood. Furthermore, the low
income groups in particular, should be continuously given up-to-date knowledge.
