The effectiveness of participatory learning on a life skills development program to prevent sexual problems for 8th grade students
Abstract:
Adolescence is a stage of change for sexual development. Adolescents
become interested in learning about and experimenting with sex. The progression
of information technology has caused adolescents to seeks knowledge from the
mediums that encourage imitation and the building of experience by themselves.
This condition causes sexual problems. Life skills training is one of the important
strategies to appropriately prevent sexual problems which are increasing.
This quasi experimental research studied the effectiveness of participatory
learning in life skills development to prevent sexual problems for the 8th grade
students in Supanburi province. The 77 students who met the requirement criteria
were selected to be the sample group. The subjects were divided into two groups,
38 students in the experimental group and 39 students in the control group. The
experimental group received four activities about learning life skills and
prevention of sexual problems. The control group received the conventional sex
education teaching. The data collection was performed before and after the study
and analyzed by percentage, mean, standard deviation, Student’s t-test, and paired
simple t-test.
The results of the experiment showed that after the study the experimental
group had mean scores of self-awareness, social responsibility, sexual emotional
management skills, and refusal skills significantly better than before and better
than the control group.
It could be concluded that the participatory learning positively affected
the life skills development in sexual problem prevention in the students because the
learner received stimulation for maximum learning. Stimulation was encouraged
though maximum participatory and maximum performance in all activities of the
life skills program. So, the sex education teaching method should be considered for
use as a conventional curriculum for students in a comparable situation.
