The effectiveness of participatory learning program on sex education for the father or mother of Mattayomsuksa II students, Meuang district, Lopburi province
Abstract:
This study is a quasi-experimental research design and aims to study the
effectiveness of Participatory Learning Program on Sex Education. Assessment of
the effectiveness of the program was done by pre-test and post-test on sexual
knowledge, attitudes toward sex education, comfort in giving sex education, and
providing sex education for the father or mother of Mattayomsuksa II students.
Implementation and evaluation was done during August 11 – October 7, 2003. The
sample consisted of fathers or mothers of Mattayomsuksa II students of two
schools, under Lopburi Educational Service Area Office I, Meaung District,
Lopburi Province. The experimental group comprised 37 parents and the control
group comprised 74 parents. Statistics used for data analysis was frequency,
percentage, mean, standard deviation, chi-square test, Independent Sample t-test
and Paired Sample t-test.
Results revealed that before program implementation, both groups had no
statistical difference in mean scores of sexual knowledge, and providing sex
education, but the control group had higher mean scores of attitudes toward sex
education, and comfort in giving sex education than that of the experimental group.
When compared, the differences in mean scores of sexual knowledge, attitudes
toward sex education, comfort in giving sex education, and providing sex education
between the two groups, before and after program implementation, it was found
that the mean differences in the experimental group was significantly higher than
those in the control group (p-value <0.001, <0.001, <0.001 and <0.001,
respectively).
The research results indicated that the participatory learning process could
promote parents to develop sexual knowledge, attitude toward sex education,
comfort in giving sex education, and providing sex education. Therefore, the
related organizations should have activities to enhance the parents’ ability in
providing sex education to their children of all ages continuously by using
participatory learning process
