Guidelines for the promotion of tourist guide consciousness regarding conservation of the inner Rattanakosin cultural environment
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to study the level of consciousness regarding
conservation of the Inner Rattanakosin cultural environment among tourist guides, the
factors related to their consciousness, the opinions of tourist guides toward activities to
promote this consciousness and to present the guidelines for the promotion of tourist
guide consciousness on this issue. Data were collected from 400 tourist guides by selfadministered
questionnaires.
The study revealed that more than half of the tourist guides (55 percent) had a
moderate level of consciousness regarding conservation of the Inner Rattanakosin
cultural environment. It was found that those tourist guides who were older (over 40
years), those who had worked longer on the job, and those who more often led tours to
visit the Inner Rattanakosin area tended to have a higher consciousness regarding
conservation of the cultural environment there. As regards opinions of tourist guides
toward activities to promote consciousness, they are most interested in pamphlets/
brochures and secondly they are interested in training/seminar and television, or radio
programs.
Based on the study I propose the following guidelines for the promotion of
tourist guide consciousness regarding the conservation of Inner Rattanakosin cultural
environment in order to improve knowledge, develop awareness and skill, and take
more responsibility for Inner Rattanakosin cultural environment conservation: (1) set
up an intensive training/seminar course about Inner Rattanakosin cultural environment
conservation for tourist guides at least once a year; (2) disseminate information by
passing on pamphlets/brochures, and using television and radio programs; (3) set up
campaigns, projects, or activities regarding Inner Rattanakosin cultural environment
conservation.
