Factors related to mental health status of public health personnel : case study in Kanchanaburi province
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine factors relating to the mental health status
of public health personnel in Kanchanaburi Province. Questionnaires were composed of four
parts: personal factors, life events, job stress, and general mental health. The population of
this research was 327 public health personnel under the Ministry of Public Health, in
Kanchanaburi Province, who had worked in Kanchanaburi over 1 year. Data collection was
done between July and September 2002. This study is descriptive in nature. Chi – square and
Logistic regression analysis were used to determine the models for findings factors which
related to mental health.
The findings of this study found that most of the public health personnel had life event
stress at a normal level, job stress at a moderate level; and 15.3% had a mental health
problem. Factors analyzed showed that there were four important variables appearing in these
models which were related to mental health status. The work factors section indicated a
feeling of being unhappy and being happy to work for only for little were strongly related to
mental health status. The life events section indicated the self and the family were important.
The job stress section indicated workload and role ambiguity were strongly related to mental
health.
