The effects of bibliotherapy on self-esteem of cripple children
Abstract:
The purposes of this quasi-experimental study was to compare the effects of
different methods of bibliotherapy on self-esteem. The various methods in this
study were reading only, reading and discussion, and reading and writing. The
samples were 21 cripple children in The Pakkred Home for Cripple Children
(Nonthaphom Home). The samples were divided by a simple ramdom sampling
into three groups: reading only group, reading and discussion group, and reading
and writing group. Each group consisted of 7 subjects. The instruments in the study
were Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, summarized books, reading tests, and post
bibliotherapy questionnaire. The data were analyzed in descriptive statistics, t-test,
and One-way ANOVA.
Results revealed that after bibliotherapy, the self-esteem of the cripple
children in all three groups was higher than before the bibliotherapy; the staistical
significance being .001 for group one, .001 for group two, and .01 for group three.
Furthermore, the self-esteem after bibliotherapy among the three groups showed
different statistical significance: .05.
These findings suggest that bibliotherapy is a useful way to develop selfesteem.
Moreover, reading and discussion proved to be the most effective way to
increase self-esteem of cripple children. However, reading and writing, and
reading only are also advantageous. The bibliotherapist should choose each
method according to the person undergoing the bibliotherapy.
