Application of cleaner technology to reduce energy use in pig farm case study : Ratchaburi province
Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to provide electrical energy baseline information
on pig farming, and to screen and evaluate the proposed options to reduce the
electrical power use. The study site was a large pig farm with a complete farming
system in Ratchaburi province. The study involved intensive field surveys. The results
of the study and analysis on the electrical energy utilization in pig production were
done through detailed assessment of the pig production processes. There was also
assessment of the principle of cleaner technology and recommendations for cleaner
technology options for management, which could be of help in reducing electrical
energy use.
The electrical energy consumption analysis showed that the amount of
electrical energy consumption was 5.92 kWh/pig and the cost was 1,861,479.59
Baht/year. The highest electrical energy consumption was the nursery unit.
(1,362.62kWh/day), which was 45 percent of total electrical energy consumption. The
second was the farrowing unit.(1,269.21 kWh/day), which was 42 percent of total
electrical energy consumption. The highest electrical energy consuming equipment
was the ventilation fans in the ventilation system. (2,576.812 kWh/day).
The results of reducing the electrical energy consumption by implementing
ventilation fan use combined with sprinklers in the farrowing building to replace the
cooling pad showed that reduction of electrical cost can save up to 284.7 kWh/year
and 40,877.09 Baht/year and thus reduce the use of cooling pad cost by about 9,000
Baht/year. The use of sprinklers can reduce the use of ventilation fans by 123 units,
the total new profit was 3,216.84 Baht/year while total new investment cost is 40,400
Baht/housing. The total capital cost and the net profit, with the sprinkler instead of the
cooling pad is 363,600 Baht and the total saving is 53,093.93 Baht/year. The payback
period is 6.84 years.
Further studies should be considered to reduce the electrical energy use in the
medium cost options and the pig well being should be measured after implementing
the sprinkler system.
