Establishing of Buddhist moralism in preventing of premarital sex of female adolescents : a comparative study among female adolescents from Buddhabutra Camp Project and higher secondary school students in Bangkok
Abstract:
This research was qualitative research in descriptive in nature type. The objective
was to study the meaning given to premarital sex and to compare the establishment of
Buddhist moralism and its role in the prevention of premarital sex among female
adolescents, subjects included individuals who have passed and individuals who have not
passed the Buddhabutra Camp Project. The samples were 30 female students in Mathayom
4, first term, year 2002, at Suksanaree School. They were divided into 15 who had passed
the Buddhabutra Camp Project and 15 who had not. The data collection was done by
informal interview. The data analysis is summarized by analytic induction, typological
analysis, and constant comparison.
The findings from the research are that female adolescents who have passed the
Buddhabutra Camp Project believed that premarital sex negatively impacts both the study
pattern and students’ future life, it is also immoral, condemned, and unacceptable by others.
Such practice also puts you at risk from AIDS and maternity, as well as potentially
leading to abortion. The virginity of a female is important. Premarital sex itself is an
immoral action, eventhough a male and female practicing premarital sex will both be willing
and are not committing polygamy. Touring around night entertainment places will bring
about moral deterioration. Drinking alcohol causes one to become uncontroled , thus
generates premarital sex. The female students in the study group always thought first prior
to doing any action. Those female students who have not passed the Buddhabutra Camp
Project believed that premarital sex is a personal right as it does not cause anyone trouble. It
is a general practice for a modern generation in todays society. It is not at all a shameful
practice since it is for the satisfaction of the two parties involved. The virginity of females is
no longer important as both parties understand each other. Premarital sex with lovers is
indeed good in order to get to know each other before a marriage. Premarital sex is not
immoral since both parties are willing and it is also not polygamy. Drinking alcohol and
touring around night entertainment areas, within the limits of socialization with friends and
useing money which is earned by an individual from working or from saving is not a wrong
action and does not cause anyone a problem.
The research result leads to suggest of establishing greater Buddhist Moralism in
adolescents, in order to enable them to be aware and think carefully before making a
decision an any actions. The objective is to prevent and solve the problem of premarital sex
in adolescents.
