Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to study suicide ideation of mid-adolescents
in Bangkok and factors affecting it. Multi-stage sampling produced a group consisting
of 396 Mathayom Suksa Six students in schools under the Department of General
Education in Bangkok. A questionnaire was used.
Research findings revealed that three percent of mid-adolescents had suicide
ideation regularly or almost every day. Eight risk factors affecting suicide ideation
were identified: not living with both parents, family history of suicide, being brought
up under conditions of physio-mental punishment, social emotional support, selfesteem
relating to the family, global self-esteem, perfectionism with concern about
mistakes, and depression. These factors explain 23 percent of the variance for suicide
ideation. It was found that the students receiving the least social support on sports
equipment and had a rather high level of depression. Moreover, some students were
physically punished by their parents and the punishment was a result of the emotion
of the parents.
Based on the research findings, I recommend that the family and the teacher
should provide loving cares to children in an attempt to reduce suicide ideation. As
for the school or the community, arrangement should be made to provide sufficient
sports equipment to meet the needs of children, and they should also organize
activities such as sports. In my opinion I think meditation and the resulting would be
a good activity for reducing suicide ideation. Moreover, the government should
inform parents on bad effects of physio-mental punishment.
