A comparison of the cognitive development of school-age children reared by their grandparents and those reared by their parents in the rural area of Phaisali district, Nakhonsawan province
Abstract:
This survey research aimed to compare the cognitive development and factors
that influence the cognitive development of school-aged children reared by their
grandparents and those reared by their parents in the rural area of Phaisalee District,
Nakhon Sawan Province. Each group consisted of 160 children. Data were collected
during May 14-31, 2003, by using interview-questionnaire and Progressive Matrices
Test. Statistics used were frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and
Logistic Regression for data analysis.
Results revealed that school-aged children reared by their grandparents and
those reared by their parents had similar cognitive development; 56.3% were within
normal cognitive development level and 43.7% were lower than normal level. The
results of multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that in the school-aged children
reared by their grandparents, factors that significantly influenced cognitive
development (p-value < 0.05) were child-care and child rearing to support cognitive
development and family income sufficiency (OR = 2.9 and 2.6, respectively). In those
reared by their parents, it was found that factors significantly influencing cognitive
development (p-value < 0.05) included child-care and child rearing to support
cognitive development, birth order and family income sufficiency (OR = 3.8, 2.8 and
2.1, respectively).
Recommendations of the present study are that caregivers and family should
provide care support cognitive development of school-aged children. Moreover, public
health officers should develop educational program regarding child-care and child
rearing for caregivers and family.
