The comparative study about anomia between demented elderly and normal ageing by Boston Naming Test
การศึกษาเปรียบเทียบความผิดปกติของการเรียกชื่อระหว่างผู้ป่วยสูงอายุสมองเสื่อมและผู้ป่วยสูงอายุปกติโดยใช้แบบทดสอบ Boston Naming Test
Abstract:
The purposes of this descriptive study were to study the mean score of
elderly patients with and without dementia, and to compare the ability of naming
objects between those patients. The samples were 35 normal elderly outpatients in
the Geriatric Clinic, and 35 demented elderly outpatients in the Memory Clinic at
Siriraj hospital, aged 60 to 85 years. The number of years of education ranged from
0 to more than 12 years. Data was collected by personal data questionnaire and test
administration which were the Thai Mental State Examination (TMSE) and Boston
Naming Test (BNT) from February to April, 2003. The statistical analysis methods
used were t-test and chi-square.
Results revealed a significant difference between the normal elderly and the
demented elderly patients. The normal patients had a significantly higher mean
score than demented patients. The mean score of the normal group was 53.51 (SD
= 5.35) whereas the mean score of the demented group was 37.20 (SD = 13.19).
The cut-off score was 51. In addition, there were statistically significant differences
between patients with and without dementia in all types of naming errors except the
“perceptual related” type.
These findings suggest that a culturally suitable, corrected BNT would be
beneficial and useful as one of the screening tools for the assessment of naming
ability. The adapted BNT would save money, be more convenient, and be of no
harm to use as a neuropsychological screening test in the Thai elderly.
