Prevalence of cytomegalovirus in periodontitis patients and healthy people in Thailand
Abstract:
Gingival crevicular fluid samples of 50 periodontitis patients and 30 healthy
controls were collected during March 2001 to November 2002 from the Faculty of
Dentistry, Mahidol University, Thailand. The age of the patients varied between 19-72
years. All samples were detected by tissue culture, immunostaining and nested PCR
method. By tissue culture method, CMV was found in 11(22.0%) healthy sites from
periodontitis patients and 9(18.0%) disease sites from periodontitis patients but only
one (3.3%) healthy site from the healthy controls. By nested PCR, CMV from the
healthy sites and disease sites were found in 3(6.0%) and 3(6.0%) from periodontitis
patients, respectively, whereas 6(20.0%) were detected from healthy sites of the
healthy control group. CMV can not be detected by immunostaining when using
human foreskin fibroblast cells. The depth of sample site, various demographic and
baseline characteristics e.g. sex, age, occupation and root planning were not associated
with the presence of CMV. Detection for the presence of CMV from periodontitis
lesions can be performed by either tissue culture or nested PCR method. The presence
of CMV in this study may be due to the reactivate of virus themselves which indicated
that CMV did not play a role as the causative agents of periodontitis
