The factors related to violence against adolescent wives : situation analysis in Kanchanaburi province
Abstract:
The purpose of this survey research is to investigate violence against adolescent wives and related factors. The samples were 301 adolescent wives living in Kanchanaburi. Data collection was done by self-administered questionnaires from 16 June to 30 August 2002. Data analysis was done by application of frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and Chi-square test. Results revealed that the proportion of adolescent wives who had violence committed against them was 74.1%. The majority of patterns of violence were mental abuse (95.1%) followed by sexual abuse (34.1%) and physical abuse (30.5%). The factors which were significantly associated with violence against adolescent wives were number of children, marital relationship, marital communication, low self esteem, and personality of husband (p-value<0.05). Suggestions for preventing and minimizing the severity of violence committed against adolescent wives are: promoting marital relationship, developing communication skills, encouraging the improvement of self-esteem, developing appropriate coping personality of husbands and creating social networks in communities to support and counsel disturbed couples
