The effect of cognitive-behavioral program to reduce aggressive behavior of adolescent students
Abstract:
The objective of this study was to examine the efficacy of the Cognitive - Behavioral Program, comprising anger management, social problem solving, and empathic skills within a group counseling process, on reducing aggressive behavior in adolescent students. The study had a quasi-experimental design. Subjects were 20 aggressive junior high school students, 12-15 years old, who had been studying in the academic year of 2002 - 2003 at Ladplakaopittayakhom School, General Division of the Ministry of Education. They were divided into an experimental and a control group. The experimental group subjects participated in the Cognitive - Behavioral
Program which consisted of 10 sessions, 50 minutes per session, over five weeks. The subjects in the control group continued daily academic activities. Data was the scores from the Aggression Questionnaire and the Thai Youth Checklist (TYC): Teachers Report Form. The collected data was used to provide descriptive and t-test analysis. Threshold of statistical significance was at 0.05. The finding of the study revealed that after participating in the Program: 1) the subjects in the experimental group had an aggressive behavior mean score lower than before, 2) the subjects in the experimental group had an aggressive behavior mean score lower than the subjects in the control group, and 3) in the follow-up period, the subjects in the experimental group had an aggressive behavior mean score lower than before. Results from the study suggest that the Cognitive - Behavioral Program, consisting of anger management, social problem solving, and empathic skills within a group counseling process, is helpful for reducing aggressive behavior in adolescents"
