Education management in the College of Dramatic Arts, Bangkok : a case study of Western vocal music
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to study about the development of various
aspects of the study of Western Vocal Music and to study the current education
instruction design of the college of Dramatic Arts. Specifically, the curriculum,
orderly procedures, management of studying and instructing as well as the study and
instructional environment were studied. The study was conducted by examining all the
documents concerning this topic and specifically, both past and present instructors and
students, interested individual, and individuals who consistently follow the activities of
the College of Dramatic Arts.
The results of this study revealed that the development of the above mentioned
aspects of the study of Western Vocal Music at the College of Dramatic Arts can be
classified in four succeeding intervals. The first step was the study of western musical
notation and western vocal music as compulsory subjects in the dramatic arts of music
and fine arts education. The second step consisted of courses being studied as free
electives in the department of dramatic arts, which offered majors in western music and
singing for the first time. The third step was classified as those courses that used a
teaching methodology from abroad in both practicing the sounds and in controlling the
breath. The fourth step was to separate a department of western music out from the
western vocal music.
The various aspects of the study and instruction of the different categories of
western vocal music found that the instructional curriculum seemed to lead the
students of western vocal music towards a career in teaching the singing of western
songs, with a stress on the practice of the vowel, consonant sounds and the control of
the breath. The study indicated that there had been progress in developing the
instructional design by using practice authorized by other countries. Regarding the
suitability of the classroom environment, it was determined that there were insufficient
rooms for each level of study, they were too small and caused problems in sound
production, and the instructional equipment was incomplete. The improvement of the
above aspects will improve the quality of the dramatic arts program.
