Abstract:
The objectives of this study are to find the concept of reform in education of
Naktham and Pali studies. Specifically, (1) to study the continuity of the development
of Naktham and Pali studies from the Sukhothai period to the present, (2) to study the
problems and obstacles to the reform of Naktham and Pali education, (3) and to study
the concept of system management of the reform process in Naktham and Pali
education. The methods used in the study were 1) documentary research, 2) analysis
of the problems and obstacles to the reform of Naktham and Pali studies, 3) and
interviews with experts, Buddhist experts and laymen.
The conclusion reached from the document research was that the use of
Pititaka by instructional managers was the most effective. Also, this study determined
that the use of the Pakornwiseat and Adthakhatha scriptures as curriculum after 1932
resulted in a lower quality Naktham and Pali education. Finally, it was found that the
past Pali and Naktham systems chose quality of education over quantity of students,
and that quantity of students is favored over quality of the education with the present
educational system.
The results of the problems and obstacles to reform of education in
Naktham and Pali at present were that input factors (students, Wat location,
curriculum, teachers, and budget) and the educational process factors (time
management, classroom management, education management, instructional
management and student evaluation) had moderate to average effects on the quality of
studying at present. The output factor (Knowledge) was not found to be effected by
the input factors above in students, whereas they were found to have a moderate to
average effect on instructional management.
The results of the concept of system management of reform were that the
interview subjects held views in which the concepts of reform in education must be
improved in both studying and teaching.
The research suggests that monks working in the education system have the
duty to directly reform the Naktham and Pali education system to raise the quality of
the current education being given. This will be for the benefit of Buddhism in the
future.
