The study of music curriculum organization at the Royal Thai Navy School of Music, secondary level, case study : string program
Abstract:
This research uses a case study approach to study the music curriculum of the secondary level string program at the Royal Thai Navy School of Music. Field data was collected from various sources such as printed materials, photographs and sound recordings, by observation, interview, and inquiry. Formal interviews were used to obtain detailed information. The main objective is to study 6 main areas of the program: Curriculum, Teachers, Students, Instruction, Materials and Equipment, and Assessment. The interviews with the executives showed that the curriculum was extended from a 5-year plan to a 6-year plan in 1994. The Ministry of Education has approved the curriculum as equivalent to the Vocational certificate according to the Vocational curriculum of 1987. The change in the education system has led to the problem of an increasing number of general education subjects, which has caused students to have less time to study music. Most of the teachers at the Royal Thai Navy School of Music are in fact the Schools alumni with a vocational degree. The interviews show that most of them have a good knowledge in music. Moreover, they are dedicated in providing instruction and assistance to students. Teachers at the Royal Thai Navy School of Music expressed the wish to study further to improve their skills, but the limited budget makes this impossible. Most students are eager to study music and expect to get a job after graduation. The interviews with the executives and teachers showed that one of the problems is too many activities, which interfere with study time. Another important problem is that there are not enough classrooms and practice rooms. The curriculum assessment is quite flexible and takes into account both the characteristics of each student and the requirements of central assessment
