Knowledge, attitude, and caring behavior for end of life patients among professional nurses in governmental Hospital Bangkok
Abstract:
The purposes of this study were to explore the level of knowledge, attitude, and caring behavior related to end of life care of professional nurses and to examine the relationships among these three study variables. Blooms Taxonomy was used as a conceptual framework for the study. The sample were 270 professional nurses with a minimum of one year nursing experience in medical, surgical, or pediatric ward, including general ward and intensive care unit having end of life patient care experience of at least one patient. Statistical analyses used were descriptive statistics, spearman rank-order correlation coefficient, one-way analysis of variance, and Kruskal Wallis H test. Results revealed that among the majority of the participants, 79.26% had a moderate level of knowledge, 94.4% had a strong positive attitude, and 74.8% had a high level of caring behavior related to end of life care. There was a significant positive relationship at a moderate level between attitude and caring behavior of professional nurses related to end of life care (r = .397, p < .01). However, there were no significant relationships between knowledge and attitude related to end of life care or between knowledge and caring behavior related to end of life care. The results provide the latest information for appropriate planning and education guideline for essential training programs for professional nurses in providing effective end of life care. Moreover, it is a preliminary step for further study in the area of end of life care
