A comparative study of family function in family with adolescent psychiatric patient and family with healthy adolescent
Abstract:
This study is a descriptive research aiming to compare family functioning in
families with adolescent psychiatric patients and families with healthy adolescents.
The sample was composed of two groups of families, comprising 70 parents of
adolescent psychiatric patients aged 14 19 years who accompanied the
adolescents to receive treatments at the Outpatient Department of Srithanya
Hospital, Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry, and Galayarajnagarindra
Institute and 70 parents of students aged 14 19 years studying in
Nonthaburipittayakom School, Wat Intharam School, and Pothisarn Phittayakorn
School. The researcher collected data from September to October 2003, using the
CFI questionnaire. The obtained data were calculated for mean and standard
deviation of family functioning score and the scores of overall family functioning
of the two groups were compared with the ANCOVAstatistical method, using
parents education as covariate.
The study revealed that in families with adolescent psychiatric patients, the
mean score of overall family functioning was at fairly good and the family
functioning in every dimension was at fairly good level except in the behavior
control dimension, which was at slightly good level. For families with healthy
adolescents, the mean score of overall family functioning was fairly good level and
the family functioning in every dimension was at fairly good level except in the
general functioning dimension, which was at very good level. In comparison, the
families with healthy adolescents achieved the mean score of overall family
functioning better than the families with adolescent psychiatric patients at a
statistical significance level of .001.
Referring to the findings of this study, it is recommended that psychiatric
nurses and concerned healthcare professionals should be aware of the importance of
family functioning in families with adolescent psychiatric patients
