The relationships of situational factors, physiological factor, and learned resourcefulness to depression of the patients with lower extremity fracture undergoing fixation
Abstract:
This study was a descriptive research aiming to investigate the relationships of
situational factors, physiological factor, and learned resourcefulness to depression of
the patients with lower extremity fracture undergoing fixation. The learned
resourcefulness theory of Rosenbaum (1983, 1990) was used as a conceptual
framework of the study. The subjects consisted of 100 male patients recruited from
the inpatient department, Lerdsin Hospital, Rajavitthi Hospital and Nopparat-
Ratchatani Hospital. The data were collected from December, 2004 to April, 2005.
The research instruments consisted of questions concerning demographic information,
Self-Control Schedule questionnaire and depression questionnaire (CES-D). Data
were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation and
multiple regressions.
The result revealed that the majority of subjects had rather high level of
learned resourcefulness (M = 141.16, S.D. = 17.42) and overall had low level of
depression (M=17.18, SD = 8.11). However, thirty-eight patients were found of
depressive. Next, learned resourcefulness was negatively correlated with depression
at the moderate level (r =- .55, p<.01). Then, family income was negatively correlated
to depression at low level (r =-.24, p<.05). Lastly learned resourcefulness and family
income were the influential variables on depression with an explained variance of
32.9 %.
Based on these findings, it is recommended that nurses seek strategies to
promote learned resourcefulness leading to protection from depression, especially the
patients with insufficient family income.
